Classic Green Bean Casserole

Classic green bean casserole combines tender green beans with creamy mushroom sauce and a crisp French-fried onion topping. It bakes until bubbling, then gets a final five minutes in the oven to brown the onions.

Ingredients

  • 1 can (10.5 oz) condensed cream of mushroom soup
  • 0.75 cup milk
  • 1 tsp soy sauce
  • 0.125 tsp ground black pepper
  • 2 can (14.5 oz) green beans cut, drained
  • 1.33 cup French-fried onions divided

Equipment

  • 1 2-quart baking dish

Method

  1. Heat the oven to 350°F.
  2. Lightly grease a 2-quart baking dish.
  3. In a large bowl, stir together the cream of mushroom soup, milk, soy sauce, and black pepper.
  4. Stir in the green beans and 2/3 cup of the French-fried onions.
  5. Spread the mixture in the prepared baking dish.
  6. Bake for 25 minutes, until hot and bubbling around the edges.
  7. Stir the casserole.
  8. Sprinkle the remaining 2/3 cup French-fried onions evenly over the top.
  9. Bake for 5 minutes, until the onions are golden brown.

Notes

For the crispest topping, add the remaining onions just before the final bake. Refrigerate leftovers for up to 3 days; freezing is not recommended because the creamy sauce can separate. For a gluten-free version, use gluten-free mushroom soup and French-fried onions.
